Experienced Emergency and Critical Care Clinician

As the Small Animal Teaching Hospital for James Cook University in Townsville, we are focused on providing excellence in clinical training for veterinary students in their fifth-year clinical rotations.  It feels good to provide a much-needed service to the community while shaping the next generation of veterinarians!

We are looking to appoint a full time experienced Emergency and Critical Care Clinician to join our ECC leadership team.  In this role you will deliver a high level of care for our patients in a positive team environment and provide authentic clinical training and mentoring to vet students, as well as to the broader team.

As the successful candidate, you will have a significant amount of ECC experience, including:

  • At least 3 or 4 years’ experience in an emergency department of multidisciplinary referral practice or a standalone emergency clinic; and
  • Experienced across all emergency cases and the majority of critical cases with little guidance; and
  • Experienced and capable to perform all emergency surgery without supervision; and
  • Preferably you will have your ECC membership or plan to sit your exams within the year.

Working closely with our ECC Specialist, ECC Team Leader and ECC Senior Clinician, your roster will enable you to have the support and guidance to further develop your skills and knowledge in a collegial environment built on respect and trust.  We will guide and mentor you through directed training, tutorials and mentored training within your work hours. If your goal is to achieve ECC membership, we will support you through this.

We have carefully structured this role to balance day, night and swing shifts on a lifestyle roster which provides ample diversity and which averages out as 38 hours per week.  The role involves a combination of hospital and consulting shifts. Recovery time is factored in and this leaves plenty of time for family, friends and exploring the great outdoors in this extraordinary part of Australia!

Why not Townsville??  It is perfectly positioned within relative proximity to Cairns and the Whitsundays and a short flight to southern cities.  We live in a maturing city with a world class stadium, choice of dining and entertainment options, quality schools and some of the best hiking, fishing, snorkeling, diving and boating in Australia.  Not to mention no gridlock traffic and affordable housing options all within a short drive of work.

If you are ready for your next step, we would like to offer you:

  • A generous and competitive salary (dependent on your qualifications and experience)
  • 5 weeks holiday leave
  • 1 week paid study leave
  • $2500 per year support towards CPD
  • A predictable and structured roster
  • Structured and on the job learning opportunities
  • Relocation assistance – inter / intrastate

If this sounds like you, please contact us for a confidential discussion or we can arrange for you to come and see our Hospital and meet the team.  Otherwise, please send your application to:
