As the clinical teaching hospital for James Cook University, our team of specialists, experienced clinicians, and referral Veterinarians provide exceptional medical care while training the next generation of veterinary professionals. Along with educating veterinary students, we also train Veterinarians to referral standards in their chosen fields. Many of our Veterinarians have successfully achieved Membership in their respective disciplines, a qualification that recognises advanced practitioners with a high level of expertise.

We work in partnership with general practice veterinarians, who provide essential primary care for pets, including preventative medicine, routine health management, and initial diagnostics. When a case requires specialised diagnostics, advanced treatment, or complex surgical procedures, referral hospitals like JCUVet provide additional expertise. Unlike referral services that rely on visiting specialists a few days a week, we offer a consistent specialist presence across a number of disciplines. This ensures seamless continuity of care, rapid access to advanced diagnostics and treatment, and ongoing case management by a dedicated team familiar with each patient’s condition.
