Guidelines for Stray Animal Management
Stray animals are a significant challenge in our community, and while JCUVet is not responsible for managing stray animals, we strive to help whenever possible without compromising the care of emergency and critical patients. To better support the community, we’ve outlined the following guidelines and advice for handling stray animals:
Our Approach to Stray Animals
- Injured Animals:
JCUVet will accept and assess injured stray animals brought to our facility. - Wildlife:
We will continue to accept all wildlife for care as usual. - Non-Injured Strays:
Non-injured stray animals can only be accepted as a last resort, after all other options for rehoming or temporary care have been explored.
What to Do If You Find a Stray Animal
If you find a stray animal, here are some steps you can take:
- Use Online Resources:
Post details about the stray animal on social media or in community groups like Townsville Lost & Found Animals. Visit JCUVet’s Facebook page for guidance on stray animal management, temporary care, and reporting options. - Contact the Local Council:
Local councils are responsible for managing stray animals and should be the first point of contact. If council services are unavailable, consider reaching out to community networks for temporary foster care options. - JCUVet’s Capacity to Assist:
While we strive to help, our ability to accept a stray depends on available space, staffing, and the current workload of critical patients. If we cannot accept the stray, we will guide you to explore alternative steps.
Important Note
During long weekends and public holidays, JCUVet focuses exclusively on emergency and critical care cases. We are unable to accept any stray animals during these periods.
Supporting the Community
JCUVet is committed to assisting the community by sharing information about stray animal management through our website, social media channels, and local radio. We continue to collaborate with the council and explore partnerships to improve stray animal support.
We appreciate your understanding as we work to provide the best care for animals in need while prioritizing emergency cases.
