JCU Vet, the Clinical Small Animal Teaching Hospital for James Cook University, is located in Townsville, North Queensland. We focus on excellence in clinical training for veterinary students and developing a postgraduate residency program.

As part of our vision, we are expanding our team of specialists in Emergency and Critical Care, Medicine, Surgery, Anaesthesia, and Radiology.

This position is ideal for veterinary specialists with experience in academia, clinical practice, teaching, and leadership. If you enjoy mentoring students and leading postgraduate research, we provide the resources and support for success.

Specialist Small Animal Surgeon applicants should hold FANZCVS, DACVS, or DECVS and a veterinary degree eligible for registration in Australia. Consideration will also be given to Small Animal Surgery Registrars preparing for board exams within 12 months.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team delivering advanced surgical care for referred patients locally and statewide
  • Support and collaborate with other disciplines to foster a positive learning environment
  • Mentor and develop veterinary interns and residents
  • Build strong relationships with referring veterinarians
  • Drive continuous improvement within the Surgery service
  • Share expertise through in-house continuing education and rounds
  • Engage in student case management, tutorials, and assessments
